WFP Welcomes US$280 Million from the US

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Afghanistan welcomes a contribution of US$280 million from the United States through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This contribution will enable WFP to provide urgent food assistance to 15.2 million people in Afghanistan from January to June 2024.

Key Highlights

  • WFP has been present in Afghanistan since 1963 and works with partners to reach the most vulnerable communities in need of assistance.
  • WFP needs US$670 million from January to June 2024 to reach 15.2 million people with lifesaving food, nutrition, and livelihood support.
  • WFP is well-placed to help Afghanistan implement several of the main recommendations of the strategic review through this country strategic plan.
  • Incessant rains in March and April have triggered floods in several districts across Afghanistan, leading to increased food insecurity.

WFP's Response

WFP is working closely with the Government of Afghanistan and other partners to provide food assistance to those in need. WFP is also working to strengthen the resilience of communities in Afghanistan to future shocks.

WFP's Country Director and Representative in Afghanistan, Mary-Ellen McGroarty, said, "This contribution from the United States is a lifeline for millions of Afghans who are facing hunger. WFP is grateful for this generous support, which will allow us to continue providing lifesaving food assistance to those who need it most."

Donor's Perspective

The United States is the largest donor to WFP's operations in Afghanistan. The US government is committed to supporting the Afghan people and helping them build a more stable and prosperous future.

The USAID Mission Director in Afghanistan, Peter Natiello, said, "The United States is committed to supporting the Afghan people during this challenging time. This contribution to WFP will help ensure that millions of Afghans have access to the food they need."
