Social Media Blackout to Protest Police Brutality
Online Activism Takes Center Stage
Blackout Campaign Gains Momentum
In response to the ongoing protests against police brutality, various social media platforms have witnessed a significant blackout initiative. On June 2nd, approximately 28 million people participated in a collective post of plain black squares to express solidarity with the movement.
The blackout campaign commenced in the wake of the temporary restrictions imposed by the military on social media outlets, including Twitter and Instagram, following the initial protests. Subsequently, the #TheShowMustBePaused hashtag emerged, prompting a widespread industry-wide blackout to amplify the message and demand change.
In addition to the grassroots efforts, major tech companies have also responded to the movement. Facebook, for instance, has announced partnerships with small publishers to address the need for increased representation and diversity in media content.
