Hugh Freeze New Deal Worth 65 Million
Auburn Head Coach Inks Six-Year Contract
Compensation Details Released
Auburn's new head coach, Hugh Freeze, has been rewarded with a lucrative six-year contract worth $65 million, according to details released by the university on Friday. The deal freezes any buyout talks until October 2022 and will pay Freeze $40 million through 2030.
Freeze, who was announced as Auburn's new leader on Monday, will receive a base salary of $6.5 million per year. This compensation package makes him one of the highest-paid coaches in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
The contract also includes various performance-based incentives and bonuses, including a $1 million bonus if Auburn wins the SEC Championship and a $2 million bonus if the team wins the College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship.
Freeze's previous contract at Liberty University was set to expire in 2028 and reportedly included a Power Five-friendly buyout option. However, the new deal with Auburn effectively eliminates that buyout and cements Freeze's future with the Tigers for the foreseeable future.
Auburn's decision to hire Freeze has been met with mixed reactions. Some fans are optimistic about the coach's potential to turn the program around, while others have expressed concerns about his past conduct. Freeze was previously fired from Ole Miss in 2017 for personal misconduct.
Only time will tell whether Freeze can lead Auburn back to its former glory. However, his new contract is a clear indication that the university believes he is the right man for the job.
